There are several unfulfilled emotional and psychological needs at the root of excessive use of technology, including the Internet, games, and phones.
When children, adolescents, young people, and adults find it difficult to deal with certain negative emotions and circumstances—such as anxiety, stress, loneliness, rejection, exclusion, and unpopularity—in the real world, they often turn to the virtual world, which they believe to be in control and that does not judge them, and accepts them unconditionally.

People who mistakenly soothe their emotions in this manner for a long time understand that they are not in control only when they want to go out of this world. As a result, an addiction cycle emerges.

People may break the cycle of behavioral addiction through CBT-based approaches, one of the psychotherapy techniques, and develop a healthy usage habit.
